The winter weather is not always fun as it causes longer commute times, wearing multiple layers of clothing to stay warm, and limited daylight to enjoy outdoor activities. However, the season is an excellent time to take care of you indoors and to take on an old or new hobby.
Whether the winter is your favorite time of the year (or not), here are a few ideas to make the most of the dark days of the season.
Get the Most Out of Your Time
Take a break. While you are at work, take short breaks during the day to sit and think about nothing in particular. Rather than interfering with your day, a couple of minutes here and there can make you more productive.
Unwind during your commute. Read a book or listen to your favorite podcast while you are on the bus or train instead of thinking about work or paying attention to the traffic. If you are driving, listen to your favorite songs.
Write it down. When you find yourself worrying about things, take a few minutes to write down all your concerns. Often, this act is enough to let you feel better about what you cannot change. Also, making a to-do list of all the things you need to accomplish is a great way to prioritize tasks.
Connect with Others
Laugh more. It is scientific proof that laughing helps you relax and can soothe muscle tension associated with stress. Whether you spend time telling funny stories with a friend, watch amusing videos on YouTube, or play in the snow with your family, find a way to bring more humor into your life.
Spend time with your pets. Take the time to cuddle and play with your pets, they are considered family too. Oxytocin, the happiness hormone, increases when you are interacting with animals. If you do not have a pet, ask a friend or neighbor that would not mind letting you walk their dog or play with their cat.
Start a hobby. Maybe, it is cooking, painting, or collecting antiques, whatever it is that you enjoy, fit your favorite activities in your day. It is important to do the things that challenge, inspire, and make you happy.
Exercise. Exercising is an excellent way to boost your immune system, and it will also keep you calmer and more content. It may be difficult to get outside to workout when it is cold and wet, however, if you can manage it, taking a short walk every day for at least 30 minutes is a good way to stay healthy.
Organize. Find a little corner of your home or office--even if it is the silverware drawer--to put in order. Similar to making a to-do list, regaining a sense of control over your space and time will help you calm down.
Take a day off. Moving is good, however, taking the time to curl up on the couch with a favorite book or movie is okay. Let yourself be still even before you go to bed. Running from task to task is no way to spend the day, and if you relax before you get into bed, you will sleep better, too.
Life can get busy with balancing family, work, and other day-to-day responsibilities. Remember to take the time to keep your mind and body healthy and happy that will benefit you and your loved ones.
