Homemade Cat Treats: Simple Holiday Recipes

By Janice Biniok

The holidays remind us there’s nothing quite as good as homemade cooking. There’s something about the lack of preservatives and excess salt that gives homemade fare a wholesome, full-flavored advantage. Cats would certainly agree with us. So while you’ve got the oven fired up for goodie-making season, why not throw in a few yummies for your kitties?

Of course, you and your cat may have different ideas about what, exactly, is a great homemade cat treat. You want something easy that doesn’t require a laundry list of ingredients, while Kitty is a little finicky about what she considers to be a delicacy. But there are a few tricks to ensure both you and your cat get what you want.

Choose a recipe with a base ingredient you know your cat will favor, such as fish, poultry, beef, or cheese. Weed out any recipes that require more than four or five ingredients, as they are more likely to require a special trip to the grocery store and time-consuming cooking stages. If you want to ensure your cat goes nuts for his "nummies," remember that most cats have delicate palettes and tend to prefer moist rather than crunchy tidbits. And you can always make your treats even more tantalizing by throwing in a dash of catnip!

If your cat is partial to poultry, try the following simple recipe:

  • Small chunks of raw chicken or turkey

  • Mayonnaise

  • Bread crumbs sprinkled with dried catnip

Roll the chunks of meat in mayonnaise, and then roll in the bread crumbs until coated. Place them on a baking sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 10-12 minutes. After cooling, these magically moist morsels may be so tasty you’ll have to try a few yourself!

If your cat likes fish, check out this simple "Fish Biscuits" recipe. If Kitty has an undeniable desire for dairy, try this recipe for "Savory Cheese Treats". And if Kitty goes bonkers for beef, you can’t go wrong with this fuss-free "Mouseburger Bites" recipe. Your culinary efforts are sure to get a few extra head rubs from your favorite feline!
