The sanctity of a light-hearted date night and/or family night are safe once again, thanks to "Paul Blart: Mall Cop," starring the incredibly, and universally, likable actor guy Kevin James (best known for his title role on TV’s "King of Queens." Your significant other can’t object: James is downright funny. Your teens will give in: James is ridiculously fart-humor friendly. Your little ones won’t need protecting: James is cartoonish in his tomfoolery—even Walt Disney himself couldn’t spot an offensive bit.
The premise is simple: Blart (James) is a New Jersey Police Academy flunkie tasked with providing a local shopping center with security. And when real baddies invade his turf, Blart rises to the occasion and goes above and beyond to protect the merchandise. Consider him the goods good guy. Think of it as a little budget-friendly retail therapy to help fight the collective January blahs with--time in the mall without the possibility of buying anything! Kind of like a shopping placebo; you’ll feel like you’ve shopped with none of the damaging receipts.
The physical humor here is the trick, and James leaves no stone uncovered—not since Chris Farley’s "fat man in a little coat" shtick has chubbiness been so sublimely played for effect. There’s tubby guy rolling sideways across tile floors; plump dude sliding across the self-same floors—and squeaking against his synthetic uniform; and spare tires bouncing off glass sliding doors.
