There’s no getting around it. If you’ve got daughters of a certain age, you’re headed to the movies this weekend to see Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2. But here’s the good news: just as you secretly loved the first one on its own merits—rather than just as a way to keep your teen or tween complaint-free for an hour-and-a-half—you will be warmly entertained by this second installment, which picks up three years after the first movie ended.
"Sisterhood 2," is based on the second, third and fourth novels in the popular series by Ann Brashares, and finds the four friends audiences fell in love with in 2005’s "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants"—played by "Ugly Betty’s" America Ferrera, "Gossip Girl’s" Blake Lively, "Gilmore Girls’" Alexis Bledel and "Joan of Arcadia’s" Amber Tamblyn—finishing up their first year in college and planning for separate summers. The pants are still flying back and forth, but the girls are growing apart as they also grow up.
The girls are older now, so expect some more mature problems that might make the age of the appropriate audience for this flick skew a bit higher than the first one. In general: they’re having sex and there’s therefore the requisite teen-movie pregnancy scare.
Much has been made about the change in the seat of power with the four fatales. When the first movie was released Bledel and Tamblyn were small-screen stars with popular weekly series. Now "Gilmore Girls" and "Joan of Arcadia" are long-since cancelled while Ferrera and Lively are riding high on two of the biggest hits on television. But the piece remains very much an ensemble and neither on film, nor in the myriad interviews the girls have done to promote the film, is there a trace that diva-dom has infected these four who we so bought as "real girls" in the first film. But then, they are good actresses.
