We don’t always mind paying ATM fees. A $3 fee to get cash from a bank in Timbuktu on a stormy night seems like a deal. After all, someone had to take the money there, maintain the machine, and keep records. No problem.
Paying $3 every time we need $20, however, is another story. ATM fees vary, so simply choosing a bank with lower ATM fees can save a lot of money over the long run.
One way to find a bank with lower ATM fees is to run an online comparison. Go to BankRate.com. Click on the Checking & Savings tab, choose Traditional or Internet checking, and follow the calculator. You’ll be surprised at the disparities in rates and fees. One bank may charge twice as much as another to use their cash machines!
