Today's news is all about hope and change, Hollywood on The Potomac...but also a little yellow dress.
That would be the sunny, lemony sheath dress and its lovely matching embroidered coat, both worn by Michelle Obama at her husband's Inauguration.
Spend-savvy fashionistas who have followed Michelle Obama's budget-kind outfits along the campaign are shouting from the rooftops today, asking if the Isabel Toledo dress Mrs. Obama's wore is...hope against hope...affordable?
Sorry ladies: the news isn't great. Cuban-American Toledo's wares aren't what you would call well-priced. Her dresses retail in the $2,000 range. And even on Ebay they're expensive. Two Toledo pieces are listed currently. A black-and-white pantsuit can be yours for a cool $950. A black Grecian-style jersey dress has a starting price of $329.
But there is an upside. First of all, if you're a fan of Anne Klein, that label's ready-to-wear line was designed by Toledo through the Fall 2007 collections, when she served as the fashion house's creative director. So if you're really aching for a Toledo design you may be able to do a little research and pick up a piece secondhand. (Hey, you may already own one!)
And if that still seems like a bit much, take heart. There's a simpler way to copy the First Lady's Inauguration-week style; snap up the J. Crew duds she sported yesterday, and the Crewcuts outfits she chose for her daughters, Malia and Sasha, when they turned out for a DC Jonas Brothers concert. Mrs. Obama's famously been a fan of the brand, and announced on "Jay Leno" this fall that her entire outfit had cost about $300 through the company.
And the green gloves she wore at the Inauguration? You guessed it! J. Crew. Now those maybe you can grab! Obama wore a wrist-length, loden-colored pair, but a pair of opera-length, green leather gloves are available for about $50 on J. Crew.com. Fine, they're a different length, and far more sea-green than loden. But this pair's on sale, so we're getting 'em. And feeling more First-Lady-like already...
