3 Real-Life Ways to Wear Trendy Tights for Less!

By Kate Martel

Tis the season to bring on the layers! And thanks to designers like Chanel, Moschino and Marc Jacobs (who sent their leggy models down the runway covered up in two toned, ribbed and wool stockings), tights are rapidly becoming the must-have accessory for the colder months. Bold colors, lacy embellishments and opaque knits are only a few of the styles worthy of slipping on. The beauty of tights is that they add a polished look to any outfit, work with everything from heels to boots and allow you to keep your favorite skirts out a little longer. Whether you’re off to work, running errands or going out for a romantic evening—tights are a trendy and sensible choice for every occasion. Here, some of our very favorite styles to try out this season.

Bold
We know what you may be thinking—bright colored legs are for kids or Halloween costumes. But hear us out. If you layer on a sleek black dress or skirt with matching heels and bland tights, you’re bound to look like you’re off to a funeral rather than a night on the town (or a even a dinner party at your neighbor's). Instead, try swapping your neutral tights for a pair that has a little more flair. The Layer It Diamond Tights by Betsy Johnson (About $30) is a perfect example of bold tights done right. Pair with patent leather heels and a black tunic or dress and you’ve easily taken you attire from boring to beautiful!

Opaque
There are a couple of different options when it comes to wearing opaque tights and it all depends on what you’re looking for. Sheerer knits offer less coverage, but look great with skirts or dresses and a pair of heels. Nordstrom Opaque Control Top Tights (About $10) are a finer, classic choice that you can easily pair with almost anything in your wardrobe. But if you’re looking for a little more coverage, try Hue Opaque Tights with Control Top (About $13). These provide that leggings look that is wildly popular right now and covers more skin if you wanted to try a shorter style dress or skit.

Sweater Knit
Once the temperature drops, trade in your thinner tights for a warmer and woollier option. Sweater knit tights are a great choice for the cooler months because they give you all the warmth of pants while you’re wearing a stylish skirt. These Thick Cable Knit Tights (About $44) are made with Merino wool and work really well with boots or under shorter skirts because they provide full coverage to your legs. If you’re looking for a less expensive version, try Merino Wool Cable Knit Tights for only $23.
