If you’re looking for a tell tale sign that winter has arrived—look at your lips. Our once perfectly plumped puckers begin to get chapped and dry due to cold windy days and nights. It is especially important this time of year to treat your lips to a little TLC in order to keep them completely kissable. Just like brushing your teeth or applying moisturizer to your face, conditioning your lips should become an activity you do at least a few times a day. And believe it or not, one of the best times to help your lips recover is while you’re fast asleep because it’s when our bodies are busy working to repair the damage we created during the day. Below are some tested (by our editors) and trusted brand name overnight lip conditioners that are sure to get your smackers on the road to recovery right in time for sunrise (and they’re all under $20!)
Chapstick is one of the classics. So when they came out with an Overnight Lip Treatment, we couldn’t help but be overjoyed. What makes this ‘stick different from their regular formula is the active ingredient—Dimethicone (which is awesome for dry skin). While you sleep, this powerful ingredient is hard at work smoothing your dry and tired lips. The consistency was a little bit thinner than we expected, but we definitely woke up with softer lips. (About $4)
Sally Hansen, a drugstore beauty product favorite also offers a nighttime remedy for lips that are craving a thirst-quenching conditioner. Overnight Lip Recovery (About $10) in a vitamin enriched, fast absorbing lip treatment that works to restore and prevent water loss in your lips while you sleep. It was incredibly soothing as soon as we applied it and worked well at taming the frustrating flakes that have taken up residency on our lips over the past few months.
Although we thoroughly enjoyed Neutrogena’s Overnight Lip Treatments (About $4) we found even better results with their slightly more expensive Advanced Solutions Lip Rejuvenating Treatment (About $18). While both did a great job softening our lips, we felt that the second option did more for your money. Not only did we get a super moisturizing lip conditioner, but this rejuvenating treatment also took care of wrinkles and seemed to plump up our lips a bit. It also contains SPF 20 and did a great job making out mouth look a little more youthful. Bottom line: if you’re young and wrinkle free try the $4 lip treatment, but if you’re dealing with a little more than dead skin, opt for the $18 product.
We know—it’s not technically a lip treatment. But this all-purpose balm works like magic on rough areas that need a little smoothing. 8 Hour Cream (About $17) by Elizabeth Arden is perfect for healing dry, cracked lips. The rich cream made our lips so unbelievably soft we had to call it a must-have treatment for an imperfect pout. It may cost a little more, but this cream can cure it all: lips, skin, elbows, feet and cuticles. So yeah it may be $17, but your money sure does go a long way!
