RedPlum's Favorite Inexpensive Home Printers

By Jennifer M. DeFeo

Printers aren’t the sexiest electronic gadgets, but they are necessities. When choosing a printer for your home, think first about how often you will use your printer and what kinds of tasks you need it for. All-in-one printers that incorporate copiers and scanners are very popular for home offices, and usually don’t cost more than print-only machines

Inkjets are cheaper than laser printers. However, if you do a lot of printing for work, consider a laser printer. They can handle more pages a month than inkjets, and in the long run can save you money on ink. Prices on laser printers have come down tremendously and you can get a color laser printer for less than $200. (Check out the Samsung CLP-315.)

As for inkjets, you can get them for as low as $19.99, however, cheaper doesn’t always mean better. When shopping make sure you research what comes in the box. Missing ink? Tack on at least $25 to that ‘bargain’ price. And note, most printers don’t come with USB cords, so if you need to buy one that’s another $15.

Not all cheap printers are bad though, we found three terrific deals for you to choose from.
